5G-NR Standalone Access Registration

The diagrams below trace 5G standalone registration — RACH, RRC setup, and registration across the AMF, AUSF, UDM, PCF, SMF, and UPF.

5G-NR Standalone Access Registration

Covers the UE registration with the 5G gNB and the 5G Core Network. Random access procedure and RRC connection setup procedure are also illustrated.

UE Interactions

UE role in 5G Standalone Access Registration. Covers RACH, RRC Setup and Registration with the AMF.

gNB Interactions

The gNB establishes an RRC connection with the UE and then acts as a conduit in UE registration with the AMF.

Access and Mobility Function (AMF) Context Diagram

An overview of AMF interactions.

Access and Mobility Function (AMF) Interactions

The UE is switching registration from the Old AMF to the New AMF. This New AMF also coordinates the registration procedure with other 5G Core Network components.

Authentication Server Function (AUSF) Interactions

The AUSF authenticates the UE during the registration procedure.

Unified Data Management (UDM) Interactions

The UDM generates the authentication vectors and processes registration and de-registration requests.

Policy Control Function (PCF) Interactions

The PCF supports creation and deletion of policy associations. The PCF also registers with the AMF for subscriber events.

Session Management Function (SMF) Interactions

The SMF handles the control plane functions of session management. It allocates and configures the UPF data plane via the N4 interface.

User Plane Function (UPF) Interactions

The UPF handles the data plane interfaces. It routes downlink traffic from the Internet to the gNB. The UPF receives uplink traffic from the gNB and routes it to the Internet.
